THE NECESSITY OF THE PROPHETIC MINISTRY

Module 1
UNIT 1 (This study guide has 10 Units)

The Christian faith is a revealed faith. Its message has divine origin although its history is an account of events that have – in a large measure – occurred in our world. This makes the Bible a relevant text for the study of human affairs and God’s participation in our world.

The Bible is replete with prophecies, promises and assurances. All these were written by prophets. God used inspired prophets to produce the Bible. But today the Christian Church is dominated by only three of the five offices that are mentioned in the Bible.

The Bible talks of the offices of Apostles, Prophets, Evangelists, Pastors and Teachers. Unfortunately, the offices of Evangelists, Pastors and Teachers seem to have overshadowed those of the Apostles and Prophets.  The ultimate result is a church that has lost a measure of its missionary zeal and prophetic power.

1. DISREGARD OF THE PROPHETIC MINISTRY

The prophetic ministry suffers general neglect in the community of believers. Several reasons account for this neglect. Let us mention a few:

    1. 1 Churches have given pre-eminence to the pastoral, evangelistic and teaching ministries.
    1. 2 The world has seen many false prophets, making the prophetic ministry a questionable engagement, consequently putting the Christian faith in shame. Besides, the rise in futurism – the study of the future uninformed by religious motivation – is making prophetic practice a corporate exercise which undermines the divine factor in prediction.
    1. 3 The church is failing to provide relevant training for the prophetic ministry and organizational space for this ministry. The church of the Old Testament had Schools of the Prophets. The neglect of these schools by Israelites, even after regular warnings by the prophets, led the nation into moral and spiritual decay. Ultimately, they qualified for captivity in a foreign land  This is why Isaiah warned Israel not to despise the prophets of God (2 Chronicles 20:20)
    1. 4 The church has allowed wordly knowledge to supersede and suppress revelation knowledge. Since prophets operate in the sphere of revelation, they are not regarded as relevant and meaningful for our age. Thus, the church and the world go without any prophetic message.
    1. 5 The Corinthian heresy.  The church in Corinth had members who were of Greek origin.  When these people became Christians they moved form their national traditions and beliefs and became very charismatic believers.  But because they had not received adequate instruction they became a disorderly congregation.  They misunderstood the role and operations of the gifts, especially the gift of prophecy.  The following verses from Paul’s pen indicate the presence of severe misunderstanding and confusion about the prophetic gift in this church:

“This is what I mean, my friends. When you meet for worship, one person has a hymn, another teaching, another revelation from God, another message in strange tongues, and still another explanation of what is said.  Everything must be of help to the church.  If someone is going to speak in strange tongues, two or three at three at the most should speak, one after the other, and someone else must explain what is being said” (I Corinthians 14;26, 27).
